The story of a married brother with three children who was shot in the face in the face in 2005 and how you can help.
This is the story of our brother Patricio Muñoz as told by his wife Betzy:
On October 6, 2005, at around noon near the city of Quevedo, Patricio Muñoz, a trailer driver, was shot by thieves from another trailer. One of the bullets hit Patricio’s left side of the face leading to severe facial damage and the loss of his eye.
When Patricio was hit, there was no sign of life. It wasn’t until he was taken to a hospital in Quevedo that he showed vital signs. The doctors suggested that Patricio be transfered to the city of Guayaquil to try to save his life. Even though Patricio regained his breath slowly in what was a miraculous story, there were no doctors that could perform the urgent surgery. Two days later, Patricio underwent an operation, but the results were unfortunate. Through the surgery Patricio was infected with a bacteria called “Klebsyela Osanae”.
Specialized doctors have performed some operations in Ecuador but they have not been able to erradicate that bacteria. The bacteria grows internally and destroys any transplant or inserted graft. Treatment for the bacteria costs Patricio around $60 USD. A medicine called Zyvox is used. He requires 25 additional sessions but he is unable due to lack of funds.
In spite of Patricio losing all the bones on the left side of his face due to this bacteria, there may be specialist doctors outside of Ecuador that can help his situation.
Thus far, no one has been willing to hire Patricio because of his physical appearance and he is struggling to support his wife and three children.
