7.3 Richter Scale Earthquake Rocks Indonesia, Aid is on the Way

Jakarta, September 3, 2009 – On September 2, 2009, a 7.3 Richter Scale rocked Java Island. The earthquake epicenter was 30 kilometers under the sea, just south of java island. The tremor brought panic to Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, while the impact was reported in the Tasikmalaya, Garut, Cianjur, and Sukabumi Districts. Up to 44 people have been reported dead, Priyadi Kardono (National Disaster Management Agency) reported through detikcom, a local media. Many report that up to 5,000 are living in makeshift shelters.

A HOPE worldwide disaster relief team is traveling from Bandung on September 3rd to distribute 50 temporary shelter (tarpaulins) as well as to assess the latest situation and what the needs are on the ground. Information is very limited at this time, but we hope that a more detailed assessment can be made before determining what further actions are needed.

Since 2004, Indonesia has been hit by several earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and other natural disasters. HOPE worldwide is actively involved in bringing hope and changing lives to the victims of these catastrophes through disaster relief, recovery, as well as disaster risk reduction education through schools in 10 provinces.
