In God’s eyes Cyprus is significant.
The first ever church mission planting was in Cyprus. See Acts 13:4, where the first stop on Saul and Barnabas’ first missionary journey was in Salamis on the east coast, mainly because Barnabas’ mother’s house was there, with probably the best lamb kebabs and home cooking this side of Israel!
The first major conversion of a political leader also took place here, that of the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus in Acts 13:6. Imagine converting the president of your country today! Some even suggest that Saul took the name Paul from this leader and sponsor.
Did I mention Barnabas was a Cypriot?
Nearly two thousand years later there is still a small, thriving, self-supporting group of disciples on this island, based in the southern city of Limassol, with members of every nation. – well British, Ukrainian, American, African, Georgian and Filipino, with Russian and Greek translation available.
For the last six years we have held a small Singles Conference in September or October. This started as a seed of an idea where we had single sisters but no single brothers. We determined that if we could not take these single sisters to other churches to meet single brothers, then we would surely bring the single brothers to them! Since then the conference has grown from strength to strength, and this year will be held on 26-30 September 2012, on the theme of “Now Is The Time!”
What better way to gain spiritual fellowship, lessons, trips and fun than in the biblical land where true spiritual giants trod all those centuries ago?
