Please pray for us as we hold up the flame for the cause of Christ in an intensely secular and atheistic society.
The winter months in this land of ice and fire are characterised by snow and strong gales from the north which penetrate right through your skin. The weather this last weekend provided no exception to the rule. However, the Lord sent a ray of warmth and light to the few but faithful disciples in Iceland by sending us Douglas Jacoby.
As he spent the weekend with us he taught the church Ten Principles of Bible Study, and also gave a presentation on The Reliability of the Bible for visitors. We advertised in the newspaper, and several atheists saw the ad and came. In fact, guests outnumbered the disciples more than two to one! In addition, Douglas preached a powerful communion sermon on Sunday, where again many outsiders joined our church family.
Responses were very positive:
• “It’s unbelievable to see how the Bible changes people!”
• “The time with DJ gave me vision to teach.”
• “I am inspired to learn Greek and Hebrew…”
• “I have more courage — to read more and dig deep!”
There aren’t many words that can describe the importance of such a visit to a small church like ours. Not only did we receive invaluable teaching from and about the Bible, but we were inspired to share our faith more boldly, and a number of non-Christians are committed to attend a group Bible study this week. Please pray for us as we hold up the flame for the cause of Christ in an intensely secular and atheistic society. And you are always welcome to visit us! Icelandair happens to fly from many European cities, plus six cities in North America. (Only remember to pack your winter coat!)
Much love from the Reykjavik Church,
Jóhann Matthíasson
