In mid-November, about 40 teen volunteers gave a group of underprivileged children (age 5-12) an unforgettable excursion to Sentosa Island. With the kind support of Sentosa management, the children enjoyed free admission onto the island and had a morning of fun and games.
The theme of the race was “Unlock Your Potential”. The children were paired with teen volunteers in groups, racing around various checkpoint stations, and working together to complete challenges, earning lettered keys, and solving clues for the next station.
For the teen volunteers, it was a chance to be creative and hone their
organizational skills by planning for the event, preparing the games
and putting together gifts and prizes. Volunteers also learn to take
care of younger children, developing character traits like patience,
empathy and discipline.
Teen disciple, Brian Oh commented: “What I experienced was simply
unforgettable. It reminded me of back when I was a kid, young and full
of energy. Bonding with the kids was quick. I felt that the event
opened our eyes and now we understood much more about the
underprivileged. We would love to visit the kids once more and do much
more for them!”
For the children, they thoroughly enjoyed their day out, especially the
ride down the Luge. It was also a time of learning as they had to solve
clues, come up with creative cheers, and complete tasks together as a
team. Interacting with the older teens has also impressed upon them
good values and principles.
