Indonesia Earthquake Update – Delivering Aid to a Community in Need

West Java, Indonesia – Sept. 10, 2009 – The damage from the September 2nd earthquake was larger and more severe than originally thought. Since a day after the earthquake, HOPE worldwide volunteers have mobilized to distribute aid to the people of Marga Mulya Village in Pangalengan sub-district. The challenges and needs are far reaching and numerous.

Presently, a volunteer team is preparing to provide children psychosocial intervention through play therapy and post disaster trauma counseling within a child-friendly environment.

HOPE worldwide is assisting local schools to reopen, by providing temporary classroom for two high schools, two middle schools, and eight primary schools in Marga Mulya village.

In this village, 15,371 residents have been affected. Approximately 2,865 homes have been destroyed or damaged. The village leader shared that residents are still fearful and are unable to stay inside their houses yet.

Marga Mulya has close to 5,000 children under 14 years old who are living vulnerably with limited shelter, health service, food, education or even a place to play. By providing the relief services to this community in distress, HOPE worldwide is working to fulfill our mission of bringing hope that will change lives.
