On the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September the London church celebrated its 30th anniversary. We were joined by Douglas and Joyce Arthur, who led the mission team to London, of eight courageous souls, in 1982. Also joining us were Mike and Terrie Fontenot, who have, in recent years, done so much for the London church, in supporting, discipling, counselling and working with, our leaders.

On Saturday evening, the church “looked back” over 30 years of what God has done. We were regaled by singing groups from the ‘80s – “Revival”, a classical singing group, and “AOSIS”, a more soulful version. We watched videos of many of us in more youthful days, as well as messages of thanks from London converts who are now spread around the globe. Doug Arthur preached to us about “Going for Gold” and reminded us of the audacious faith that a team of men and women in their twenties had, when they took on the challenge of London’s lost millions and the hundreds of millions in the Commonwealth that is tied to the UK.

The theme of Sunday morning was “looking forward”. Mike Fontenot talked about “Passing on the Torch”. Click here for Audio Lesson>>> He called us to “fix our eyes on Jesus” despite the distractions of the world and the flaming arrows of the enemy. Five commended brothers were appointed elders over the London congregation – Andrew Agerback, Mike Farrell, Mohan Nanjundan, Paul Rowden and Toks Sowoolu. We remembered gratefully the services of our two former elders – Adrian Hill and John Partington, who continue to serve God and his people faithfully.

After church the “oldies” – those baptised between 1982 and 1991, met for a noisy lunch celebration at Wong Kei’s, a restaurant in central London with fond memories for many of us who became Christians during that first decade of the church.

Many of our young members were highly inspired at images of their parents, elders, evangelists and many others in their youth, and of the story of what God has done through weak but faithful people. Perhaps the greatest legacy of this celebratory weekend will be in the vision that they caught for what God can do through their generation. May it be so!
