Every group needs someone who is the life of the party, the energy giver, the “lift everyone’s spirit” person. Alexandro Holguin, a student at the University of New Mexico, definitely fit that role during the December 2013 HOPE Youth Corps in South India. He was not the only one with boundless energy – but he certainly stood out with his infectious zeal and fun spirit.
The young people who came on that trip sacrificed a comfortable Christmas at home to spend two weeks living like locals, sleeping with the mosquitoes, eating with their hands, and “showering “ with a bucket, all in the heat of South India. Radical in their faith and not afraid of taking risks, they embraced the adventure.
Alexandro embodies that spirit of faith. This is what he told me:
As a teen I had gone to Mexico to build houses. I loved it. I felt a connection. I got to pour myself out. I got attached to the children of that community and I was not afraid of getting hurt. I was determined to do that again. That is why I came to India.
Helping the poor is part of our Christianity. It is not an option. Jesus was always with the poor. I am convicted by the gratitude I see in people here. As a result of this trip, I want to go to South America, where my roots are…After seeing what has been done here, I want to reproduce this in another part of the world that is close to my heart. I want to go on a mission team, take a risk and grab opportunities to serve. I want to have no regrets. I also want to grow in humility through this kind of service.
