HOPEww Ebola Response: Protecting West African Communities

August 21, 2014 — Thanks to the support of our disaster response donors, HOPE worldwide has been able to send US $10,000 to help meet critical needs of disciples and their communities in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus. Below is a list of our partner churches that have received funds and are assisting their members and communities with basic needs.

Eglise Chretienne de Conakry

Conakry, Guinea
Funding: US $2,000

Funds will benefit:
170 individuals (120 adults and 50 children)
42 church members and the poor living within the surrounding communities

Funds will be used for:

‘Ebola Kits’ which include; soap, Javel (disinfectant), water purifiers
Disinfecting homes
Rice for disciples and needy families
Raising community awareness about Ebola prevention

Freetown Christian Church

Freetown, Sierra Leone
Funding US $4,000

The total number of church members in Sierra Leone is 250. However, the most affected families are those residing in Bo, Makeni, Grafton, Mile 91, Kono, and some in Freetown. There are estimated to be 65 families with 85 children in need of assistance.

Funds will be used as follows:

30% will be sent to those in the provinces, including those close to the Ebola epicenters, for purchasing and distribution of food items. The church is working to create Ebola awareness and prevention
50% will be used to purchase and distribute food items to those in Freetown and Grafton and also to step up the awareness and preventive measures against the spread of the virus
20% will be reserved for any emergency issues that may arise

Monrovia Church of Christ

Monrovia, Liberia
Funding: US $4,000

To meet the basic needs of 100 families in the Monrovia Church and community the church is:

Purchasing food items (rice, Argo oil)
Distributing sanitation materials (chloride, soap, soap and detergent) and first aid medications
Educating six communities in three days about Ebola prevention
Providing sanitation buckets to be placed in the main entrances of the community markets
Printing and handing out flyers on Ebola prevention methods in targeted communities with the goal of reaching more than 500 persons with life-saving information
Establishing a crisis committee to keep donors informed of relief and prevention activities in the Monrovia church and community
