In the mid-90s, one of the mission teams in China (UC-2) was abruptly deported by the police. The seeds of the gospel that were planted in the young disciples left behind continue to grow into a strong and fruitful tree. The 125 committed disciples in the church are grateful for their salvation and God’s grace through these sacrificial and bold mission team members, led by KC and Margaret Chan, who were willing to fulfill a calling for the lost in the city. As UC-2 celebrated their 20th anniversary on December 1, 2014, 12 members of the original mission team from Hong Kong were invited back to their ‘Land of Dreams’ to celebrate together. This is one of the many stories of miracles shared:
Julian’s Story
Sydney, Australia: On December 26, 1992, Julian attended a Christmas at Dave’s home and was impressed by the joyful and friendly atmosphere. It was Dave, an Australian brother, wearing a Chinese silk shirt that day, who met and invited him a few days before on the street in Sydney. Later, Dave brought Julian to the church and introduced him to Turner & Elizabeth Sinn, who were organizing a Chinese ministry reaching out to oversea students from H.K., Taiwan and Mainland China. When Julian attended the Chinese Zone service and studied the Bible with the Chinese brothers, his life was never the same again.
After a few months of Bible study, he was baptized in April 1993. Filled with joy and zeal, he invited all his friends to church. He also had a special dream and determination to share the gospel with his friends back in China; a tiny seed was planted in his heart and would take root and bear fruit.
City #2, China: In August 1995, at the age of 30, Julian made a life-changing decision to quit his job, leave everything behind and return to City #2. Around that same time, the UC-2 planting was announced and Julian wholeheartedly joined the mission team. The initial underground church planting witnessed a great growth of 18 baptisms in just two months by the end of that year. In June of the following year, the young fired-up church faced a major persecution during their Sunday gathering with the secret police deporting the Hong Kong mission team members the very next day. Julian continued to live with the local brothers and persistently shared his faith on the streets, in bookstores and on the subway and set-up studies after work.
One day when he went to visit a customer for work, he got lost and ended up meeting Joseph, a young man whom he got to several months earlier. They had met in a bookstore and even started a Bible study, but for some reason, they had lost contact. Joseph then invited Julian to visit his office on his construction site and later he continued to study the Bible again with Julian and the brothers. Joseph even invited his roommate Denson to activities, and Denson came to study the Bible with the brothers as well. In 2001, both Joseph and Denson were baptized into Christ. Against all odds, one flickering faith has impacted two souls that each later became Underground Church leaders!
Julian was married in 2005 and has two sons. He is one of the many Kingdom heroes of whom a tiny seed of faith was planted to produce a rich harvest of dreams by God’s amazing plans to win one soul at a time.
