From Fear to Faith

sheila presley jones

Everyone deals with fear of some sort…

If someone asked you why you have fears, what would you say? What causes you to fear?

Fear grows out of realizing that we are not in control of our lives, of our destinies. We do not have the power to make things go the way we want them to go in our lives. So every new second brings the unknown: you could win the lottery or you could have a heart attack.

I am an editor. I edit manuscripts. I would love to have the power to edit the manuscript of my own life…but I don’t. Only God does; he is the author of life, and I cannot edit him.

As I introduced this topic, some of your own fears probably came to the forefront of your minds. What are some of those fears?

Examples:

  • single mom/woman married to a non-disciple—My children will not grow up to become disciples because they do not have a dad who is a believer.

  • single—I will never marry, and I will end up not having anyone to take care of me in my old age.

  • physically challenged—I will become disabled and will not be able to take care of my self.

  • mother—Something might happen to my child if she goes to camp.

  • friend—If I speak the truth to my friend, she might hate me.

  • any woman—The thoughts I have to deal with are so bad that I could never be pure like other women.

  • any other woman—God will punish me because I have been such a bad person.

  • traveler—This plane is about to fall out of the sky.
