Travel information
HSC 2011 participants will book flights in/out of Miami International Airport on the start/end dates of the HSC. Once you have received an HSC acceptance notice from HOPE worldwide, you must submit your Miami travel information to Zack Goodwin at zack_goodwin@hopeww.org by SEPTEMBER 15.
Further details about travel arrangements between Miami and Port-au-Prince will be included in the acceptance notice. Please do not book any flights until HOPE worldwide has given you explicit instructions.
Immunizations and medicine
HOPE worldwide recommends that you contact a travel medicine clinic in your area. Additional information can be found online at the website for the Center for Disease Control
Recommended packing
It is going to be extremely hot in Haiti. Your clothes should be lightweight, breathable summer clothing. Shorts and tee shirts are acceptable. No tank tops or short shorts are allowed. There are no clothes washing facilities readily accessible so bring enough clothes for your stay.
Lodging
HSC participants will be staying at an orphanage. There will be some tents available for your use. You will be sharing your tent with other team members. The orphanage will provide a small mattress for each volunteer, however bringing an air mattress as a back-up is a good idea.
You must provide your own bedding—sheets, blankets and pillows. Remember that temperatures will be extremely hot as you pack. If you are traveling with a friend or two, you are strongly encouraged to bring your own tent. Many Haitians are in need of a tent, therefore, you may leave it in Haiti once you’ve departed if you wish.
Meals
The orphanage will provide two hot, quality Haitian meals per day. Participants should bring something for breakfast everyday—breakfast bars, pop tarts, instant oatmeal, etc (hot water may not be available). Other suggested food items include Cliff bars, protein bars, turkey or beef jerky, drink mix, and light snacks. There is no refrigeration available so food should be easily stored and individually packaged. You will be provided with bottled water, so having powdered drink mix (such as Gatorade or Crystal Light) would be beneficial.
Communication between the United States and Haiti
Some American cell phones companies work in Haiti. Typically, voice rates are expensive but text and email plans are affordable. Contact your wireless provider for rates and service availability. You will be given an Emergency contact number that can be used if absolutely necessary.
Security
Professional security, provided by a private security company, is on-site 24/7. Anytime you are outside the orphanage you will be in a group escorted by Haitian nationals. Individual travel is discouraged.
Medical assistance in Haiti
HOPE worldwide has identified a suitable medical facility. We will have transportation available if necessary. Having a pre-existing medical condition (e.g. – diabetes) will not preclude your going but you must notify HOPE worldwide prior to your acceptance to the program in your application.
