A Chinese Christmas Miracle: The Baptism of Auntie Ling

joans-mom-1There can be miracles in Christmas. We are still amazed by the story of Joan’s father, who was baptized on June 19, accidentally fell down on the floor and broke his leg the very next day of his baptism. As an advanced cancer patient, his physical condition couldn’t sustain the injury. He stayed at the hospital for two months until he rested his soul in God.

Joan’s mother, Auntie Ling, started to study the Bible in the same month. Instead of complaining about this cruel fate that had come upon her family, she deeply felt loved by God during the rough time when her husband was in serious illness, especially when he broke his leg and stayed at the hospital with severe pain. She prayed to God daily and vulnerably. God answered her prayers specifically and generously. She shared all this to us with grateful tears.

She kept studying the Bible and coming to church services while her husband was in the latest stage of his life, even the next morning after he passed away. Despite her unfailing seeking heart, she had once thought that becoming a Christian was only a simple decision to make until she studied the lesson of sin and the cross. Then she understood that she has to repent of her sins and love God wholeheartedly so as to become a true disciple of Jesus. Besides apologizing to Joan for not supporting her in becoming a Christian many years ago, she initiated to apologize to a couple of her relatives about how she had harbored bitterness towards them for years. She humbly asked for their forgiveness and told them that she realized she was wrong after studying the Bible. It’s definitely not an easy deed for a 66-year-old grandma.

joans-mom-2Like many other traditional Chinese mums, the last hindrance for her to become a Christian was that she had her high commitment to help and take care of her oldest son’s family and grandkids. Nonetheless, she didn’t let God down. After studying the Bible about “…a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,” she decided to rearrange her priorities in life. She talked to her son about her decision to become a Christian and that she couldn’t help him as before. I was inspired by the great faith of this lady.

The WUTC sisters have done a beautiful job to love and to walk with Auntie Ling all along. After six months of Bible study, Auntie Ling was baptized on December 29, 2014 with the witness of her whole family.

There can be miracles when you believe…
